Enrollment in 2008-09 - UPDATED INFORMATION -  June 30, 2008
As you may know, Homecroft is closing as an elementary school. Approximately 60 students from Homecroft were assigned to Groveland as their neighborhood school. Homecroft students may also choose to go to other schools in St. Paul. Although we do not have exact enrollment numbers at this time, our earliest indicators are that we do not have many Homecroft students signed up for Groveland.

Kindergarten for 2008-09:
We have had many prospective kindergarten parents and their children tour Groveland during the school year. We also had a good turn out for the February Kindergarten Round Up. Our registration numbers for 2008-09 are not complete yet, but appear to be higher than last year. Due to this increase, we are considering opening a fourth section of all day kindergarten for 2008-09. UPDATE: As of June 30, 2008, our numbers for kindergarten are up from last year and we are opening another section for kindergarten. Ms. Lori Seastrand will move from first grade to teach kindergarten. We are continuing to enroll new kindergarten students.

Some parents have asked about half-day kindergarten. We will offer a limited number of spaces for students whose families are interested in half-day kindergarten.

Half-Day Kindergarten Questions and Answers:
Do you offer half-day kindergarten at Groveland?
Yes, we will offer half-day kindergarten within the regular full day program. Half-day students will be in a class with students attending for the full day. Students attending for half the day will attend the morning only and leave at 11:55 a.m. each day. Transportation will not be provided at 11:55 a.m.

Why offer a half-day program?
Some families have felt their children will do well in a half-day kindergarten. We value our families’ feelings on this topic and have chosen to offer the half-day option for the 2008-09 school year, the same as it was offered in 2007-08. The morning curriculum will consist of a literature block (reading, writing) and math.

First Grade in 2008-09:
We will have three first grade classrooms.
UPDATE:We have a new first grade teacher to take the place of Ms. Lori Seastrand as she will be teaching kindergarten in 2008-09. Ms. Diane Johnston is our new first grade teacher. She comes to us with excellent first grade teaching experience and has been in our district teaching first grade at Benjamin E. Mays.

Second Grade in 2008-09:
As you may know, two of our three second grade teachers retired - Connie Johnson and Linda Eggert. Our second grade program will miss the presence of these strong teachers and we wish them the best in their retirement!

Our student enrollment projected numbers for second grade in 2008-09 look about the same as they were in 2007-08 at 26 students per class. Paul Nelson, our present computer integration teacher, will be leaving the computer lab and taking over one of the second grade classrooms.
UPDATE: Jean Gerbino, English Language Learner (ELL) teacher at Groveland, will be teaching second grade in 2008-09. Ms. Gerbino worked with the first grade classes in 2007-08 and so they will have a familiar face to see when they return in the fall!

Third Grade/Fourth Grade for 2008-09:
In 2007-08, we have had three sections of third grade, but only two sections of fourth grade. In 2008-09, as the third graders move to fourth grade, class sizes will be large if we only have two fourth grade classrooms. However, we may not have enough students to support adding another fourth grade classroom. Our options at this time are to consider a split third/fourth grade classroom. We will continue to monitor our enrollment numbers. If we have enough new fourth graders enroll, we will add a fourth grade classroom. Either way, we have a plan in place which we are confident will work well for third and fourth graders.
UPDATE: As of June 30, we are planning to have a split third/fourth grade classroom. Our class sizes in fourth grade would simply be too large if we did not have a split class. Ms. McPartlan will teach the third/fourth grade class. She has a wonderful background in Reader's and Writer's Workshop and will do an excellent job with a split class. (There is always the possibility that our enrollment could increase enough to hire another teacher for fourth grade.)

Fifth and Sixth Grades in 2008-09
:
Our projected enrollment is approximately the same as it was this past school year. We will have two classes for each grade.
