| Postmodernism | | | | Narrative by Rachael Woo Chuang | In Modernism, reality used to validate media. In Postmodernism, the media validate reality. If you don't believe this, just think how many times you've described some real event as being 'just like a movie.' - Brad Holland
The name Postmodernism is used to describe art that doesn't have clear order. The art piece can be very complex, seem to not make sense, or refer to things the viewer might not understand. This art styles name is sometimes shortened to Pomo.
This art style came into vogue during the 1960's. Part of its power was a rejection of the Modernism movement from the early part of that century. The style of Postmodernism is not only found in paintings, but in sculptures and architecture too.
An important idea in Postmodernism is that the person viewing the art piece is supposed to find personal meaning in a piece. The artist does not always do this for the viewer, so deep thinking and public discussion often help.
