I was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama in a plain frame house called “Ivy Green”. At the age of 1 and a half my parents noticed I was sick and hade the scarlet fever. I hade gone deaf and blind. I was hard to control so they got help from Anne Sulivan.
I say the day Anne Sulivan came was my soul’s birthday. She tried to teach me how to communicate by making the shape of letters in my palm. At first I did not understand what the shapes meant until Anne brought me to the water pump. At the water pump Anne put my hands under the water and spelled out the word WATER. Finally I understood! That day I learned 30 words. By the age of 16 I could communicate well enough to get ready for college.
In 1898 I entered Radcliff College. I did as well as other students in class even though some administrators had doubts about me.
I was a writer for 50 years and wrote 11 books and many articles. I also gave many speeches.
I made my last major public appearance in 1961 at Washington D.C. I died at the age of 88 in my sleep on June 1968 at Arcan Ridge.

I am Helen Keller.
