I was born on July 20, 1919 in Aukland, New Zealand. I have a brother named Rex. I became interested in climbing on a high school trip. After high school I became a beekeeper with my brother.
I have always dreamed of climbing Mt. Everest, so, I climbed and explored eleven summits. Then I knew that I was ready.
In 1953, when I was 34, I joined an expedition to climb Mt. Everest. My Sherpa guide and porter was Tenzing Norgay. Many people decided to quite because of high elevation. Every hiker turned back during the hike but Tenzing and I kept on going. Finally we had made it to the summit of Mt. Everest around 11:30. We only spent around fifteen minutes up there and then we headed back down. There were no pictures of me because Tenzing didn’t know how to use a camera. Now I am famous for being the first person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest! The highest point of the earth!
After I became famous, I went back home to my normal life. I got married and had three children. I lost my wife and daughter in a plane crash.
I died around 9:30am at the age of eighty eight at the hospital with heart failure on January 11, 2008. I am remembered on New Zealand’s 5 dollar bill.
