Principal’s report:

Budget – 476 is projected enrollment for next year.  The high projection is due to an assumption that many Homecroft will come to Groveland.  LA students are moving to other parts of the city where they cannot be bused here.  The  District will assign new LA kids to other schools from here on out.  Becky has planned for 3 Kindergarten teachers with a plan to hire an additional teacher if enrollment is high.  There’s a plan for one teacher aide.  Carolyn Nelson is retiring next year.

Priorities for hiring:

  1. Kindergarten Teacher
  2. Grade 4 teacher
  3. Teaching assistant

To address what could be larger classes in second grade, Becky could consider a 2/3 split by taking 9 children from second grade.  She also presented the option of having a 4/5 split due to the fact that we presently have 66 students going into the 4th grade and 48 in the 5th grade. The alternative is to have larger classes but parents and staff felt larger classes would work for this group of students.  Teacher aides can be hired to help out with the larger classes if the budget allows.  From the discussion it sounded like parents favored larger classes sizes to the split classes.

Budget issues generally come down to a lack of money, declining enrollment and loss of students to charter schools.

A parent suggested that If parents wish to impact the budget, they should consider learning more about how to do that by checking out www.parentsunited.com  and www.psminnesota.org.

SCIP – Becky reviewed the plan.  A new SCIP There were concerns voiced about behavior issues.  Becky assured us that there will be a behavioral plan in place next fall to deal with some of these issues.  Becky stressed that overall as a school Groveland has very few behavior problems.  Please contact Becky if you have specific issues or want to have input on this but she is unable to address a specific child’s issues with another parent.

If you have concerns with the info in the SCIP please contact Becky.
